General Introduction to William Wordsworth, The Poet Of Nature.
Wordsworth (1770 – 1850) was one of England's greatest poets. With an early interest in politics, he went to France during the revolution (1791-1792) and came close to being executed in the Jacobin terror. Until the rise of Napoleon, Wordsworth was a firm believer in the benefits of the Revolution. He returned to England and moved to the Lake District, where he met and became friends with Coleridge.
Wordsworth is the greatest nature poet of England. While other English poets took delight only in the external aspects of Nature. Wordsworth sought in natural objects the dwelling spirit of God. He beloved that nature could give a personal health, beauty, and grace of body.
